In western Iran, about 180 km northwest of Hamadan, is the small Kurdish town of Bidjar. It has a long history of craftsmanship and can boast of being the epicenter of the most robust rugs in the world. The simple Persian rugs from Bijar are also reverently referred to as “iron rugs” because of their unrivaled durability. Kurdish rugs are known for their extremely tight weave. They are made by hand using high-quality wool and the Ghiordes knot (Turkish knot), which is known for its strength. The technique used here is demanding, requires a high degree of precision and skill, and is performed exclusively by men. In this process, the knots, including a previously moistened weft thread, are processed using a heavy iron comb to create a pile that is so dense that it is virtually vertical. The above-average thickness of the weft thread does the rest to give Bijar rugs a long lifespan and exceptional wear resistance. Another characteristic element is the so-called “Herati” pattern, which is particularly common in Persian rugs and adorns many Bijars. The spectrum of interpretations ranges from two fish swimming around a lotus flower, to abstract geometry, to a flower surrounded by four palm leaves. It is believed that it was originally designed as a protective symbol to ward off evil spirits and protect the home of its owner. Alternatively, medallion and flower patterns are also frequently found, which, like the Herati, can be found in both classic and modern interpretations, with the details emphasized by silk as needed. Bijar rugs are characterized by their strong colors, which are usually dominated by deep (rust) red, blue and earth tones. Derived from plant and mineral materials, they are durable, warm and deep. They are occasionally complemented by green accents and black or brown outlines to highlight the patterns. All in all, a Bijar is deliberately restrained and simple in terms of color and pattern. In combination with its density, it is suitable for almost any room. The strong pile, with a knot density of up to 600,000 knots per square meter, underlines the intention of creating a rug that is as robust as possible and at the same time extremely dirt-repellent. The Bidjar is ideal for heavily trafficked living spaces of all kinds. Dirt particles can do almost no harm to it; an interplay of all the attributes already mentioned. Its subtle understatement and the compactness of the pile make it a real all-rounder. You can find Moiré Bidjars in all possible forms, including special forms and sizes up to 6 x 4 meters and larger. They provide further useful evidence of their versatility and ability to thrive in a wide range of spatial and practical environments, while shining in an inimitably elegant way. Those looking for a Persian rug that can withstand the daily wear and tear of heavily used rooms will appreciate Bijar rugs. Thanks to a high density of symmetrically knotted knots, combined with a pile of the finest wool and a warp of robust cotton yarn, they will remain in excellent condition for generations if properly cared for. The Bijar is an impressive combination of craftsmanship, deep tradition and practical functionality; qualities of a valuable and lasting investment.Knot & comb
